SWAYAM is an institute for mentally challenged. It was founded on the 25" day of June in the year 1990 at Kasaba Bavada, Kolhapur, under the guidance of the Red Cross Society of India and is duly recognized by the government. It is a registered Public Trust organization presided over by the Dist. Collector. The school has a strength of 97 students, 40 of thm are taken care of through government aid while the remaining 57 being provided for from the funds available to the Red Cross Society of India. Early intervention and provision of special education required for children with disabilities are the main aims of the institute. It helps each child develop adaptive skills also known as life skills such as daily living, social skills & occupational awareness. The school helps create and implement an educational plan tailored to meet each student's individual requirement. Different types of mental disabilities require different approaches. For this, the institute has appointed a team of highly motivated experts which indude an E.N.T. specialist, a neurologist, a speech therapist and a dinical psychologist. This team not only helps the students, they even spread awareness through camps and facilitate parent participation. This further helps build a parent teacher rapport which eventually guides the child towards adaptive behavior and better functioning society. Till date, more than 2000 have benefitted from such camps.

स्वयम मानसिकदृष्ट्या आव्हानात्मक संस्था आहे. भारतीय रेड क्रॉस सोसायटीच्या मार्गदर्शनाखाली 1990 च्या जून महिन्यात "कसबा बावडा, कोल्हापूर येथे जूनच्या 25 जून रोजी" स्थापना केली गेली आणि ती सरकारद्वारे मान्यताप्राप्त आहे. ही एक नोंदणीकृत सार्वजनिक ट्रस्ट संस्था आहे जिचे अध्यक्षपद आहे. जिल्हाधिकारी, शाळेची १२० विद्यार्थ्यांची ताकद आहे, तर 40 पैकी 40 शाळांना सरकारी मदत देण्याची तर उर्वरित ८० तर भारतातील रेड क्रॉस सोसायटीला उपलब्ध असलेल्या निधीतून देण्यात आली आहे. अपंग मुले ही संस्थाचे मुख्य उद्दीष्ट आहेत.त्यामुळे प्रत्येक मुलाला अनुकूलीतील कौशल्ये विकसित करण्यास मदत होते ज्याला दैनिक जीवन, सामाजिक कौशल्य आणि व्यावसायिक जागरूकता यासारखे जीवन कौशल्य देखील म्हणतात. शाळा प्रत्येक विद्यार्थ्याच्या वैयक्तिक गरजा पूर्ण करण्यासाठी तयार केलेल्या शैक्षणिक योजनेची निर्मिती आणि अंमलबजावणी करण्यात मदत करते. वेगवेगळ्या प्रकारच्या मानसिक अपंगांसाठी वेगवेगळ्या पध्दतींची आवश्यकता असते. यासाठी संस्थेने अत्यंत प्रेरित तज्ञांची एक टीम नियुक्त केली आहे जी ईएनटी स्पेश कॅल्यलिस्ट, एक न्यूरोलॉजिस्ट, एक भाषण चिकित्सक आणि एक दैनंदिन मनोवैज्ञानिक. ही संघटना केवळ विद्यार्थ्यांना मदत करत नाही तर ते कॅम्पमधून जागरुकता पसरवतात आणि पालक सहभागास सुविधा देतात. हे पालक पालक शिक्षक बनविण्यास मदत करते जे अंततः मुलाला अनुकूली वर्तनासाठी आणि चांगले कार्य करणार्या समाजाकडे मार्गदर्शित करते. आजपर्यंत 2000 पेक्षा अधिक लोकांना अशा शिबिरामुळे फायदा झाला आहे.

Apart From Sports, Students Go On Tours Extending For A Couple Of Days Which Helps Them Move A Step Closer To Self Reliance And Co - Existence Away From Their Home. 'SWAYAM' Has Successfully Experimented By Holding Annual Social Gatherings, Where These Children Are Encouraged To Exhibit Their Talents. What Is Different About These Gathering Is That They Are Not Held In Any Auditorium Or Closed Hall. They Are Conducted In Open Public Places. The Institute Has Held Gatherings In Bindu Chowk, Open Grounds And The Mahalaxmi Temple, Court. It Plans To Hold The Next One In Dasara Chowk. This Is Done To Give The Children A Sense Of Wilder Space And Freedom . There Is A Bigger Interaction As The Audience Is Larger And More Responsive. Rehabilitation Is A Path To Normalcy To A Large Extent. It Gives These Children A Sense Of Being Wanted And Accepted. The Institute Has Undertaken Rehabilitation Schemes By Finding Jobs For Its Inmates In Factories In Packing Departments Or With Grain Merchants. 'SWAYAM' Runs Adoption Facilities Where You Can Individually Sponsor A Child For Rs. 5,000 Or Make Direct Contributions. All Such Contributions Are Exempt From Income Tax Under Section 80 G.

१.खेळ-आत्मविश्वास वाढवण्यासाठी क्रीडांगणावरील खेळ ,ग्रुहांतर्गत खेळ इ आयोजन केले जाते.

२.सहल- घराबाहेरच्या जगचा परिचय व्हावा,स्वतंत्र व्यक्ती म्हणुन स्वतःचा परिचय व्हावा यासाठी सहलींचे आयोजन केले जाते.

३.स्नेहसंमेलन- मुलांचे कलागुन विकसित व्हावे यासाठी स्नेहसंमेलनाचे आयोजन होते.याचे वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे हे बंद हॉल मध्ये न करता चौकात,ग्राउंडवर,मंदिरात घेतले जाते.यामुले मुले समाजाचा स्वीकारभाव अनुभवतात व समाजालाही आपण यांचे पालक आहोत हा संदेश मिळतो. स्वयंम संस्था दत्तक पालक योजनाही चालवते.आपण एका मुलाचा वार्षेक खर्च द्यावा अशी अपेक्षा असते.या देणगीला ८० G सवलत प्राप्त आहे.५०००रु ही देणगी रक्कम आहे.
